Freelancer & Remote Worker Tax Obligations in Nepal

Nepal's growing freelance and remote-work economy comes with tax obligations that many first-time freelancers overlook until a bank or client asks for documentation.

PAN Is Still Required

Even as an individual freelancer with no registered company, you need a PAN to receive foreign currency payments through Nepali banks and to file any required return.

The 5% Final Withholding Rate

Freelancers receiving payment in foreign currency from overseas clients are generally subject to a flat 5% final withholding tax on that income — simpler than the progressive slabs that apply to domestic salaried income, and typically deducted at the banking stage.

When Progressive Slabs Apply Instead

If you also earn domestic-currency income (from Nepali clients) alongside foreign freelance income, that portion is generally taxed under the standard progressive income tax slabs rather than the flat freelancer rate — the two income streams aren't automatically combined at the flat rate.

Banking & Documentation

Nepal Rastra Bank requires proper documentation for inward foreign remittances tied to freelance work — invoices, contracts, or platform statements — to process payments smoothly and avoid your funds being held for verification.
