Ward Registration in Nepal: The Requirement Founders Miss

Founders who've just gone through OCR company registration often assume they're fully registered and can start operating. Ward registration — a separate, local-government-level requirement — is the piece that gets missed most often.

Why a separate registration exists

Company registration with the Office of the Company Registrar establishes your business as a legal entity nationally. Ward registration is a distinct, local requirement administered by your municipality, confirming your business's physical presence and operation within that specific ward. The two serve different regulatory purposes and neither substitutes for the other.

What you'll need

Typically: your company registration certificate, PAN certificate, citizenship of the proprietor or authorized signatory, and proof of your business premises — a lease agreement or ownership document for your registered office address.

Why this trips people up

Because Ward registration happens outside the OCR and IRD process entirely, it's easy for a founder focused on national-level registration to simply not know it's a separate step. Many only discover the gap when a local inspection, a loan application, or a license renewal specifically asks for it.

Renewal isn't always automatic

Depending on your municipality, Ward-level registration may need periodic renewal — another detail that's easy to lose track of if it's not part of your standard compliance calendar alongside your national-level filings.

Building it into your registration checklist

The cleanest way to avoid missing this: treat Ward registration as a standard step immediately after OCR and PAN registration, not an optional local formality. If you've been operating for a while without confirming this is done, it's worth checking rather than assuming it's covered by your national registration.
